Let’s take things too far, mmmkay?

When I read this morning that more and more Koreans were showing signs of mental illness, I shrugged the article off until I read about Korean protesters so angry with Japan over the latest dokdo dispute that they used hammers to kill a bunch of pheasants in front of the Japanese embassy. It’s pretty damn shocking, to say the least.

A commenter on the Marmot’s Hole dropped some pretty irony that is rather amusing.

The Korean nationalists are killing Common pheasant(Phasianus colchicus),and it’s name in Japan is Kourai-kijiコウライキジ meaning “Korean Pheasant”. The natonal bird of Japan is Green Pheasant(Phasianidae versicolor),a subspecies of Common pheasant only seen in Japan.

I can’t believe these assholes got away with clubbing these birds like that. If this had happened in an “advanced” country, those idiots would have been rounded up and thrown in the squad car. Its episodes like this that the “world” sees and no matter how many ads the government pays for to promote Korea’s dynamic and sparkling side, the international press is far to cynical and negative to let stories like this slide, while clean and magical commercials about korea get pushed back further and further away.

In an apparent attempt to keep the identity of the above pheasant secret, NEWSIS blurred the face of the dead bird. Not sure the bird had a face at that point, but if you are going to show the bloody hammer and flag, why wouldn’t NEWSIS so the crushed head?

I wonder how much of the additional mental illness is due to Koreans changing attitude towards mental health itself and the government finally realizing that leaving the problem unaddressed in no kind of a solution.

But, onto the real story. This is simply awful. I grew up in the country and I hunted and killed a variety of animals usually for consumption. But, these shots of people taking a hammer to birds on a city street….this is something ugly and inhumane. My stomach is curling, not from the picture, but from imagining the state of mind of the people willing to take a hammer to the head of another living thing.

I know that any time an animal is killed it’s not pretty. Slaughterhouses, hunting, etc. But, this is something different. Something abhorrent.
