China Blue is a documentary which follows a young woman named Jasmine as she begins work in a denim factory. She comes from a poor family in the Sichuan Province, and travels for 2 days by train to reach her place of work.
Most interestingly it also gives very detailed interviews with the factory owner and his views on his workers and business practice are disturbing. Also of note is that he is the former police chief of the city, and one wonders at what kinds of connections and the level of protection he operates under from his local Communist Party bosses. I suspect he carries a lot of influence.
It also shows several of the buyers as the come to China to do business and they are shown, fairly or not, in a very unflattering light.
It only runs an hour, and is well done. If it’s not airing on your local PBS station petition those crafty Somali pirates.
